Names of Kingdoms and Sultanates in Kalimantan

Kalimantan which is also called Borneo is divided into three regions of the country, each territory of the Republic of Indonesia is around 73 percent, Malaysia is around 26 percent and Brunei is around 1 percent.

The term Borneo - derived from the name of the sultanate of Brunei - was the name used by the British and Dutch colonials to refer to this island as a whole, while Kalimantan was the name used by residents of the eastern part of the island which is now part of Indonesia.

The northern region of this island, namely Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak for Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. Meanwhile for Indonesia in the northern region of North Kalimantan Province.

In a broad sense, Kalimantan includes the entire island which is also called Borneo, whereas in a narrow sense, Kalimantan only refers to the territory of Indonesia.

Historically, several kingdoms and sultanates have existed on the island of Borneo, both in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan.

Central Kalimantan: The Kingdom of the Principality of Kotawaringin (Kutaringin).
