Names of Kingdoms and Sultanates in Sulawesi

INDEPHEDIA.com - Sulawesi is one of the four Greater Sunda Islands and the eleventh largest island in the world in Indonesia. History records that on the island of Sulawesi, several kingdoms and sultanates once stood.

The kingdoms and sultanates in Sulawesi included Cinnotabi' (later to become the center of the Wajo Kingdom), the Sultanate of Bone, the Sultanate of Gowa, the Sultanate of Soppeng and the Sultanate of Tallo.

Then, Alitta Kingdom, Bangkala Kingdom, Bantaeng Kingdom, Binamu Kingdom, Sawitto Kingdom, Marusu Kingdom, Wajo Kingdom and Kedatuan Luwu.

The entry of Islam into Sulawesi triggered the establishment of Islamic-style kingdoms. The development of Islam in Sulawesi could not be separated from trade on this island during that time.

Like the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo before it became an Islamic kingdom, it was a kingdom that often fought with other kingdoms in South Sulawesi.

This kingdom is a combination of two kingdoms originating from the descendants of the Kingdom of Gowa which was founded by Tumanurung Bainea in the early 14th century. In the 15th century, this kingdom was divided into two, namely the Kingdom of Gowa and the Kingdom of Tallo.

During the reign of King Daeng Matanre Karaeng Tumapa'risi Kallonna, Gowa and Tallo were united and since then have been known as the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo or the Kingdom of Makassar.

At the end of the 16th century, the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo entered the Islamic period and turned into a sultanate. This kingdom also carried out political expansion by spreading Islam to other kingdoms.

The aim of this political expansion was for other kingdoms to embrace Islam and submit to the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo. The kingdoms that eventually submitted to the Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo were the Kingdom of Bone in 1611 and the Kingdom of Wajo in 1610. (*)
