Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park Global 200 Ecoregions

 


INDEPHEDIA.com - Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS), Sumatra Island, Indonesia, is included in the Global 200 Ecoregions on this earth.

Global 200 Ecoregions, namely the ranking of the most striking terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats on earth from a biological point of view made by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).

WWF has identified 867 terrestrial ecoregions across the Earth's land surface as well as freshwater and marine ecoregions.

The purpose of this classification system is to ensure that a wide variety of ecosystems will be represented in regional conservation and development strategies.

From these ecoregions, WWF selected the Global 200 as the most important ecoregions for global biodiversity conservation.

WWF's Global 200 List contains 238 ecoregions, consisting of 142 terrestrial, 53 freshwater and 43 marine ecoregions, including the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra.

Tiger, Sumatran Rhino and Elephant Conservation Area

Administratively, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park has an area of 356,800 hectares and is included in the administrative areas of Lampung and Bengkulu Provinces.

TNBBS is one of several forest areas in the world that are important for tiger conservation in Southeast Asia, home to half the Sumatran rhino population and a quarter of the elephant population.

Therefore, WWF highlighted it as a priority area for the conservation of the Sumatran rhino through the Asian Rhino and Elephant Action Strategy (AREAS) program.

In addition, IUCN, WCS and WWF have identified Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park as a Tiger Conservation Unit, namely the most important forest area for tiger conservation in the world.

In 2002, UNESCO chose the BBSNP area which was declared a Wildlife Reserve in 1935 and became a national park in 1982 to be proposed as a World Heritage Cluster Mountainous Area. (*)
