INDEPHEDIA.com - Jakarta Old Town, an area that was built by the Dutch as a center of trade in Asia during the colonial period. This area is always crowded with tourists every day, both local and foreign tourists.

The development of this area began in 1526. At that time, Fatahillah sent by the Demak Sultanate attacked the port of Sunda Kelapa in the Kingdom of Pajajaran which was later named Jayakarta. In 1619, the VOC destroyed Jayakarta which was then commandeered by Jan Pieterszoon Coen. A year later, the VOC built a new city called Batavia.

In 1635, the city extended to the west bank of the Ciliwung River. The city was designed in a Dutch European style and arranged in several blocks separated by canals. The city of Batavia was completed in 1650 and functioned as the VOC headquarters in the East Indies. During the Japanese occupation in 1942, Batavia changed its name to Jakarta and became the capital of Indonesia today.

In 1972, the Governor of Jakarta, Ali Sadikin, issued an official decree that made the Old City a heritage site. This decision aims to protect the history of architecture and buildings remaining.

In the Old City Jakarta, visitors can visit the Fatahillah Museum, Bank Indonesia Museum, Railway Station City, Sunda Kelapa Harbor, Puppet Museum, Maritime Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics and others.
